BMI, Blood Tests, Breakfast and Breast Feeding

On December 3, 2007, NBC aired a broadcast with regard to childhood obesity.

Four of the issues discussed were:

1) Getting a BMI (body mass index) test on your child.

This test determines if your child is over or underweight, or if they fall in the obese category.

2) Have your child screened for high cholesterol.

High cholesterol is becoming more common in young children, and may lead to a variety of problems.

3) Ensuring that your children eat breakfast.

Eating breakfast has again been proven vital to maintaining a healthy weight in children.

It is also a known fact that when children eat breakfast, it helps to fuel their brains, and they do better in school

4) Breast feeding is now proving to be an indicator for normal weight children.

It was suggested that an infant be breastfed for the first six months.

It’s sad to see that children should have to be subjected to blood and/or cholesterol screening at an earlier age, however, without it, we have no way of knowing if we need to change our children’s diets.

China Toy Recall – Will It Create A Shortage

The Mattel toy recall, combined with Fisher Price toy recall, also known as the China toy recall, has taken millions of toys off of store shelves.

The question remains, will the massive toy recall. create a shortage of toys for the holiday season?

The toys listed in the Mattel toy recall, the Fisher Price toy recall, and any other toys involved in the China toy recall list, can be found on the website of the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission)

Considering that Mattel and Fisher Price recalled many of the favorite toys for children, when the buying season arrives, it will be imperative that all department stores have their shelves stocked, and ready for the buying season. Any sign of a shortage, could create panic buying, as well as inflated prices on the internet.

Unfortunately, when toys are purchased, we have no way of knowing if they will be subject to another recall.

As parents, it’s our responsibility to stay abreast on the CPSC’s recall list.

Again, you can go to the CPSC. website, and obtain the full list of Mattel’s recalled toys, Fisher Price recalled toys, and all toys involved in the China toy recall list.

If you are concerned that the China toy recall may create a shortage for the holiday season, buying your toys early may be the answer.

Based on the fact that a lot of the toys contain lead paint, it’s very important for parents to know which toys are on the toy recall list, and to also remove those recalled toys from the home.

Autism is nearing epidemic proportions, according to the guests who were on Larry King today (9/26/07). Larry King interviewed Jenny McCartney, Holly Robinson Peet, and Dr. Jerry Kartzinel.

Jenny McCarthy, Holly Robinson Peet and Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, all have children with autism.

Recently Jenny McCartney wrote a book about her experience in dealing with a child with autism, how he was treated, and how she found hope. The name of the book is: Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism. Her child is now in a main stream school, and is doing well.

Jenny McCartney and Holly Robinson Peet, also did an interview on Oprah, and spoke on the same subject.

For those of you who may not have seen either Larry King, or Oprah, here are some valuable links for information on autism.

Jenny McCarthy’s website is TACA – Talk About Curing Autism

The website site set up by the Peet family, is www.hollyrod.org

And, the Larry King show has a commentary by Jenny McCarthy. Here’s a link to it: Jenny McCartney commentary on Larry King

Another great autism website is: Autism Research Institute, or DAN – Defeat Autism Now

And, on Oprah’s website, links can be found for the the interview with Jenny McCartney and Holly Robinson Peet

I really like how these parents define their child’s disease. They do not say their child is autistic. They say, “My child has autism”, helping to take a “label” off of the child.

If you are looking for help, for a child with autism, the above links should get you on the right path.

Jenny McCartney is a very passionate advocate for autism. Her hope is to speak before Congress, with regard to fighting autism.

UPDATE: Another informative website for children with autism, is Autism Speaks.org, which contains autism videos.

On December 19, 2007, Dr. Phil did a show on autism. Listed below are some of the links that his website suggests visiting.

The Minnesota Autism Center, also offers great resources. You may also want to check out The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation

The American Academy of Pediatrics is a website that’s “dedicated to health of all children”, and one worth bookmarking.
