This tip could save your life,or the life of your loved ones.
You know, when you’re at a stop sign, and you see a big truck approaching, should you go, or let the truck go by first? I say, let the truck go by.
Did you know, a truck that’s fully loaded with cargo, can weigh over 80,000 pounds? Most vehicles weigh under 5000 pounds. That means, a fully loaded truck can weigh over 16 times more than a standard vehicle. If a fully loaded truck has to stop, it takes them much longer than it would for a person in a vehicle. It you were to be hit by a fully loaded truck, your chances or survival are pretty slim.
I’ve ridden in large trucks. I’m amazed at the stupid things drivers do when they see a truck coming. They will pull out right in front of the truck, pass when it’s a danger to do so, and slam on their brakes in front of the truck. Personally, I would rather be behind the truck. If something happens in front of that truck, it makes a great shield for me.
Also, if you’re traveling on the highway, and want to pass a truck, keep in mind, if you can’t see the driver’s mirrors, he can’t see you. Many accidents have happened because a vehicle has been in the truck driver’s blind spot.
Truckers drive as an occupation. Time is money to them. If you get into a situation where you’re driving too slow and the trucks are stacking up behind you, find a place to safely pull over and let them get by. Remember to let them know well in advance that you are planning to either pull over or turn off the road. Use those blinkers.
If you’re driving on a hilly road, remember, a truck will usually slow down going up a hill, but when they’re coming down a hill, they have all of that weight behind them, and they build up momentum. Again, I would rather have them in front of me. It’s pretty intimidating to have a big truck on your bumper when you’re going down a steep hill. Sometimes that can’t be avoided, so remember to drive for the conditions of the road.
I ‘m not writing this to scare you, but I am writing this to make you aware that truckers are in a situation where they can’t stop as quickly as a vehicle can. Drive accordingly, and teach your children to do the same. It could save a life.
