Oprah And Peter Walsh Give Motivation To Declutter

March 26, 2008 by Barbara Swafford · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Archives, At Home, At Work, decluttering

Did you see Oprah on March 26, 2008? It was about people who hoard stuff, aka hoarders.

Peter Walsh, author of “Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?: An Easy Plan for Losing Weight and Living More was a guest on Oprah.

The show was a rerun, but ever since I saw it the first time, It has stuck with me. Clutter is bad, for many reasons.

But, it’s tough to let go of clutter. In some odd way, we become attached to our “stuff”. It makes us feel secure, but often wanting more.

But, the problem is, if we hoard stuff, we can create a breeding ground for all kinds of unhealthy stuff…spider nests, black mold, mildew, and other unhealthy airborne viruses and respiratory problems. It’s lack of air circulation that partially causes these problems.

Oprah’s show me motivated. I got rid of stacks of magazines, cleaned out my closets, and cabinets, and now have a good collection of stuff to sell at my next garage sale.

It also opened my eyes to what I bring into the house. I try to only buy stuff I need or will use.

As I get older and wiser, I find I now only want to be surrounded by stuff that “makes my heart sing”. Stuff I really, really, really enjoy looking at. That’s right, that’s 3 “reallys”.

I also keep my receipts. Often, a day or two after I buy something, I change me mind and decide I really don’t want/need it. Now I take it back to the store.

Did Oprah’s show on hoarding motivate you? What did you think about what Peter Walsh had to say?

Update:

Or did you see Dr. Phil’s show on April 28, 2008 about hoarders? Share your thoughts in the comment section (below).

Nate Burkus Shares Seven Decorating Tips With Oprah

berkus mainNate Burkus Shares Seven Decorating Tips With OprahToday, January 10, 2008, on Oprah, Nate Burkus was one of the guests. (I think it was a rerun)

Nate shared with Oprah and the audience, seven tips for decorating your space.

They are:

1) Use lamps instead of overhead lighting. Find ones that compliment your style

2) Utilize nontraditional items as wall art.

3) Nate says that every room needs a piece of sea art. Think seashells, coral, etc…

4) Add one unusual chair. It does not have to match the other furnishings

5) Frame notes or thank yous you receive from friends and family. In a pretty frame, they look great.

6) Decorate with your favorite books. Placing them on your coffee or end table, may be inspired to relax and read.

7) Personalize your space. Include items your love or have picked up while on vacation.

Make your space your own. Although many magazines show beautiful pictures of glamorous rooms, remember, those were done by an interior designer. Although those photos are great for inspiration, show your individuality in your home.

Enjoy decorating. Visit Oprah’s website for more tips and ideas from Nate Burkus.

1) Get yourself a reusable shopping bag, and use that instead of “paper or plastic”

Dr. Oz Lists Five Foods To Avoid

If you have watched Oprah, Dr. Oz is often the guest.

When talking about diet issues, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen have often spoken of five food “groups” to avoid.

They are:

1) Hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil and/or trans fats

Mehmet Oz
Image via Wikipedia

2) Sugar
3) High fructose corn syrup
4) Enriched flour
5) Saturated fat

Often, you will hear some of these called “white foods”.

White foods have all of the nutrients and fiber stripped from them.

By reading labels, and making a conscientious effort to avoid these five ingredients, you will become a more informed consumer.

By reincorporating “whole foods” back into your diet, weight loss may result.

It is often written, to “shop the outer aisles of the grocery store”. That is where you will often find fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains.

Do you want more information about Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen? Check out their Real Age website, their book, The Real Age Diet or read more on Oprah.com

Update: Dr. Mehmet Oz now has his own TV show, named Dr. Oz

Review – Dr. Oz’s Green Drink – A Glass of Fresh

November 12, 2007 by Barbara Swafford · 3 Comments
Filed under: Archives, Diet & Health

When Dr. Oz was on Oprah on November 5, 2007, discussing anti aging, he made his “green drink” for Oprah.

When Oprah tasted the green drink, she commented, that it tasted like a glass of “fresh”.

The drink intrigued me, so I decided to try it.

The recipe is as follows:

Dr. Oz’s Green Drink Recipe:

Two handfuls of fresh spinach
1 apple, remove stem, and core, do not peel
1/2 cup of fresh parsley
Fresh ginger, peeled, 2-3 slices
1 cucumber, do not peel
4 Stalks of celery
The juice of one fresh lemon

Wash the fruits and vegetables.
Place all ingredients in a blender.
Blend until smooth.
Do not strain the drink. Many nutrients are in the fiber/pulp.

When adding the ingredients to your blender, cut them in chunks.

Do not place all ingredients in your blender at one time. “Puree” one or two ingredients, then add another. Continue pureeing, until all ingredients are added.

I had a problem with my blender pureeing the ingredients, so I added 1/2 cup of water. More or less water can be added, based on the desired thickness of the drink.

I did not have fresh ginger, so I used “pureed” ginger, which I buy in the supermarket. It comes is a tube, and I find it in the produce section. I used one tablespoon of the pureed ginger.

The drink made approximately two cups.

I drank one cup, and refrigerated the other, for later.

My review: The drink is very pleasant tasting. The apple adds enough sweetness, therefore, additional sugar isn’t required

None of the ingredients are overpowering.

If you are one who does not consume enough fruits and vegetables, this is a great way to add fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Dr. Oz’s green drink is something I will definitely make often.

I like the fact that it is very healthy, and the ingredients are fairly inexpensive.

Cheers!
